Radiological consequences of the accident at the Chornobyl NPP via prism of anti-radiation protection problems of the population of Ukraine

ABSTRACT:
Objective. We analyzed the problems of radiation protection of the population of Ukraine via a prism of the radiological consequences at the Chornobyl NPP.

Materials and methods. Ukrainian and foreign scientific materials, national and international regulatory framework for radiation protection of the population and staff were used in the study.

Methods: bibliographic, analytical, dosimetric, statistical, method of systematic approach.

Resume. Separate measures for the overcoming of the consequences of the radiation accident at the Chornobyl NPP, taking into account the current methodology for radiation safety and current medico-biological and radioecological realities, were analyzed, security problems in some spheres of the application of radiation technologies were evaluated. It was established that not only socio-economic recovery of contaminated areas were unreasonably delayed but the great problems in the radiation protection of population from medical exposure and technologically-enhanced natural sources of natural origin were accumulated as well. Separate approaches for the ensurance of the radiological safety, demonstrated their ineffeciency in the implementation of state policy on the overcoming of the consequences of the Chornobyl accident and contradicted to the international practice of radiation protection (risk compensation), were included in the national legislation as one of the basic principles of the state policy of nuclear and radiation safety.
