AI Usage Policy
General Principles
The journal Environment & Health adheres to internationally recognized recommendations regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in scholarly publishing, including the principles developed by the STM Association (International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers) and the European Association of Science Editors (EASE).
The Journal recognizes the potential of AI tools as supportive instruments in scientific publishing while emphasizing that scientific research must remain the product of human intellectual effort and responsibility.
Authors' Responsibilities
Authors bear full responsibility for:
- the accuracy and reliability of all data presented;
- the originality of the manuscript;
- the scientific validity of the research findings.
Artificial intelligence tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors of a scientific manuscript.
Acceptable Uses of AI
Authors may use AI tools for:
- language editing, including grammar correction, stylistic improvement, and translation;
- technical formatting of manuscripts;
- supportive data analysis, provided that all outputs are thoroughly verified and validated by the authors;
- preparation of illustrative materials, provided that the scientific content and data are not distorted or misrepresented.
Unacceptable Uses of AI
The following practices are prohibited:
- generating scientific text, research results, or conclusions without substantial intellectual contribution from the authors;
- using AI to fabricate, falsify, or manipulate research data;
- generating fictitious references or bibliographic sources;
- concealing the use of AI technologies during manuscript preparation.
Disclosure Requirements
If AI tools have been used during the preparation of a manuscript, authors must include a separate section entitled "Declaration on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)" immediately before the References section.
When AI technologies are used, authors are required to:
- clearly disclose the use of AI within the manuscript (e.g., in the Methods or Acknowledgements section);
- specify the name of the AI tool and describe the nature of its use (e.g., language editing, supportive data analysis, or data visualization);
- confirm that all AI-generated outputs have been reviewed, verified, and approved by the authors and comply with the principles of research integrity;
- accept full responsibility for the content of the submitted manuscript.
Editorial Policy
The Editorial Office reserves the right to reject or retract a manuscript if this policy has been violated.
