Abstract

Russia’s full-scale military aggression against Ukraine has led to a range of social problems, among which the rising prevalence of smoking – a harmful habit – amongst the younger generation is a cause for particular concern.

AIM. To investigate the characteristics of smoking prevalence among 15–17-year-old adolescents in Kyiv during the Russian military aggression.

MATERIALS AND METHODS. Analytical, sociological, and mathematical methods were applied. The study population consisted of pupils aged 15–17 from general secondary schools in Kyiv. The survey was conducted during 2024-2025. The total number of respondents was 533. An original purpose-designed questionnaire was used.

OVERVIEW. The overall prevalence of tobacco smoking was found to be 29.3%. Depending on age and sex, between 8.2% and 23.1% of respondents indicated that the war of aggression against Ukraine had influenced their decision to start smoking. Nearly 18.9% of those surveyed have smoked regularly since the age of 12–13. Against a background of declining prevalence of manufactured cigarette smoking, a rise is observed in the number of adolescents using alternative smoking products, which on average is 5.7 times higher than the share of daily traditional cigarette smokers. One third of adolescents are exposed to passive smoking at home, with the proportion of girls affected being higher than that of boys. On average, 95.3% of adolescents are aware of the health harms of smoking; however, only 75.9% of respondents intend to quit.

CONCLUSIONS. Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine has led to changes in children’s smoking behaviour. The high prevalence of smoking among adolescents in Kyiv is an unfavourable prognostic indicator in terms of the development and maintenance of this population’s health. The following negative trends in the prevalence of smoking among adolescents have been identified: an early age at which regular smoking begins, high prevalence rates of alternative tobacco products, and the impact of second-hand smoke.
